IMAGE OF THE MONTH - DECEMBER 2009

SUPERIOR WINTER 0499

"Ray of Light"

This image is easily one of my all-time favorites, not to mention one of my most popular. This is Hollow Rock on Lake Superior, about 3 miles south of the village of Grand Portage. I made this image on a very cold December morning (about 20 degrees below zero). You only get this light effect on extremely cold mornings early in the winter, when steam is rising off the lake. It also needs to be winter for the sun to rise directly behind the rock. This was one of those magic moments that will forever be burned into my memory.....

Camera: Canon EOS Digital Rebel
Lens: Canon EF-S 18-55mm
Focal length: 18mm
Shutter speed: 1/100
Aperture: f 5.6
ISO: 100
