Spirit Little Cedar Tree : Known as "Manido Gizhigans" to the Ojibwe people, the Spirit Little Cedar Tree (commonly known as the "Witch Tree") has been watching over the waters of Lake Superior on the Grand Portage Indian Reservation for an estimated 300-400 years. The tree has spiritual significance to the native Ojibwe people of Grand Portage, and the land the tree lives on is considered a sacred area. Whenever someone crosses the waters of the big lake to the Susie Islands or further beyond to Isle Royale or perhaps even Whitefish Bay, the tradition is to pass by the tree before starting the journey and sprinkle some tobacco at the base of the tree as an offering to the Great Spirit in return for a safe journey across the often treacherous waters of the big lake. PLEASE NOTE: Access to the Spirit Tree is restricted. The Grand Portage Reservation has closed the trail to public usage to help protect the tree. Access is only permitted by taking a guided tour with a naturalist from the Grand Portage Lodge.

The Pigeon River : The Pigeon River forms the northern boundary of the Grand Portage Reservation and is also the border between the U.S. and Canada. The river is the largest stream along Minnesota's north shore, and drains a total of 610 square miles flowing eastward approximately 30 miles from its source at South Fowl Lake on the edge of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. This gallery includes images of South Fowl and North Fowl Lakes and images taken within Grand Portage State Park, which has about 13,000 feet of river frontage within its boundaries.

Hollow Rock Resort : Hollow Rock Resort encompasses a small stretch of Lake Superior shoreline on the Grand Portage Reservation. Owned by the Grand Portage Reservation and operated by Grand Portage Lodge and Casino, the resort rents cabins that are a stone's throw from Hollow Rock itself, the resort's namesake. While the resort area is very small, it contains (in my opinion) one of the most interesting pieces of shoreline to be found anywhere on Lake Superior.
