That's the first thought that entered my mind when I saw this cloud. It made me think of a scene from an alien invasion movie. Like some sort of space ship advancing over the horizon. It sure has been an interesting week for clouds and this is probably the most interesting one I've seen in a long time.

"Fat Bike Sunset"
February 14, 2016 - Since I shared a shadow picture of me and my bike yesterday, I figured I better show a picture of the actual bike too! So, here is my Surly "Ice Cream Truck", admiring the setting sun on a clear, cold day. For those that don't know, fat bikes allow you to ride on packed trails in the winter. They have tires that are at least twice as wide as a typical mountain bike tire, and you run very low pressures in them (5 to 10 psi compared to at least 30 to 35 psi in a mountain bike and probably twice that in a road bike tire). The large tire footprint and the low pressure gives you tremendous flotation for a bike, allowing you to ride on snow as long as you have a reasonably firm trail to ride on.

SUPERIOR SUMMER 8850
"Autumn in August?"
August 25, 2015 - Crazy autumn-like weather yesterday! It definitely felt like fall with temperatures in the 50's, intermittent rain sprinkles and high winds all day long. I didn't let that stop me from taking my Monday evening post-work bike ride though. Maybe I should have stayed home, because I had a mishap which totally mangled the front derailleur on my bike. I had to remove it from the bike in order to complete the ride. During the last 5 miles of the ride I was descending in elevation back towards Lake Superior and looking at these beautiful clouds out over the lake. I was hoping the entire way that they would hang on until I got home so I could get some pictures. Luckily for me, the conditions lingered long enough for me to arrive home, grab my camera gear and run half a mile down the road to grab this shot.

GRAND MARAIS 8601
"Grand Marais SUP'er"
A stand-up paddleboarder paddles across the Grand Marais, Minnesota harbor entrance in front of some beautiful summer sunset clouds. I noticed he was not wearing a life jacket or any kind of wet or dry suit... definitely NOT recommended on Lake Superior! The water is very cold; I guess he figured he wasn't very far from shore so he could have made it back to shore rather easily before hypothermia set in if he had fallen off. Perhaps the little bundle on the front of the board is a life jacket? That's better than nothing, I guess, but the life jacket isn't much good if you're not wearing it.

"Sunset Smoke Haze"
July 2, 2015 - We have had a lot of haze in our sky lately, which I've heard is being caused by smoke coming from forest fires in Canada. It certainly has made for some interesting views of the sky lately. A few nights ago I captured this photo of the sun a couple of hours before sunset. The majority of the sky at the time was lacking any detail, but the area immediately surrounding the sun had some really interesting clouds. Add to that the unique color at the time and I think it makes for an interesting shot.
